  • Sona comes from Proto-Italic verbal root *swen- "to sound"[2] plus feminine suffix -a
    • *Swen- historically yields Proto-Italic *swenos > Latin sonus > French son > English sound.
    • Her title Maven references her musical skill with her Etwahl. & comes from Yiddish:
      • From Hebrew מֵבִין meḇin & מבינה meḇinah, active participles of hebin < bān < Semitic root b-y-n "to separate, to discern";[3]
    • Her instrument's name is based on & pronounced the same as French étoile [etʷal] < PIE root *h₂sters (> English star)[4]
      • Etwahl's shape is based on the Chinese Guzheng.
  • Sona is mute. She communicates with others mostly by using sign language.[5]
  • Sona is possibly in her early - mid 20s.
  • Her An icon for Sona's ability Power Chord Etwhal is an ancient magical musical instrument that was made thousand years ago.
  • Her adoptive parents led a hunt party that hired An icon representing Universe:Quinn Quinn and her brother Caleb to kill a giant tuskvore. The events led to Caleb's death. Later, Lestara sponsored Quinn to be a knight as a repayment for saving her husband's life.
  • Her adoptive father died in the battle of the Gates of Mourning, the loss of which led to An icon representing Universe:Jarvan IV Jarvan IV being captured by the Noxian army.
  • Her adoptive sister Kahina introduced An icon representing Universe:Lux Lux to the Illuminators.
  • An icon representing Universe:Jhin Jhin sees Sona as an art rival, stating that his form of art leaves longer, more lasting imprints though she doesn't know about him.
  • An icon representing Universe:Lux Lux and An icon representing Universe:Ezreal Ezreal are fans of her performance. An icon representing Universe:Swain Swain is also interested in her etwahl and potentially a fan.

  • Sona was deemed overpowered/obnoxious for Ultra Rapid Fire in April 2014, and was ultimately disabled in non-custom games.
  • At one time, Sona held the title of lowest base Armor (9).
  • Sona's Deutsch/German title, Die Virtuosin, is the feminine derivative of An icon representing Jhin Jhin's title, Der Virtuose.

  • Sona mentions music notation and direction terms in her lines. The terms themselves are derived from Italian.
    • "Adagio" = slow tempo, also 'gently' / 'gracefully' / 'leisurely'.
    • "Andante" = medium tempo, also 'agilely' / 'lightly'.
    • "Allegro" = fast tempo, also 'brisk' and 'lively' / 'cheerful'.
    • "Allegrissimo" = very fast tempo (also superlative of "allegro")
    • "Brioso, brioso!" = play with vigor, also 'vivacious' / 'high-spirited'.
    • "Sforzando = play with additional stress/prominence, meaning "with force".
    • "Ostinato" = a repeated motif or phrase.
    • "Crescendo" is both the act of gradually increasing the stress or loudness, as well as the highest or loudest point in a musical act.
  • The tune from Sona's taunt references the popular announcer line "Finish Him/Her"! from Mortal Kombat.
  • "When fields lie calm, and wind stands still. Run home." is a reference to An icon representing Fiddlesticks Fiddlesticks' theme song.

    • She is the first to be fully music-based, the second being An icon representing Bard Bard.
      • She doesn't speak at all like in Classic.
    • She exists in the  Riot Records universe, alongside Pentakill and K/DA.[6]
    • She has a combined over three hours of sound effects, music, and 'voiceover', making her the champion with the most sound files.
      • They call all be heard here.
    • She has three toggleable ('/toggle' or Ctrl + 5 by default, second row from the bottom in Options > Hotkeys > Communication > Toggle to rebind) forms (An icon representing Sona/Cosmetics Kinetic, An icon representing Sona/Cosmetics Concussive, An icon representing Sona/Cosmetics Ethereal)
      • Changing forms a 0.5 seconds cast time and a 2 seconds global cooldown (this also triggers while in combat)
        • Each one has a 'theme' that is played in layers as the game progresses.
          • The layers played will be added to all songs depending on what basic ability is used for the first time and also which level of ultimate has been used for the first time, the latter also affecting the theme structure.
    • Sona's teammates can opt in to listen her soundtrack from the scoreboard (icon to the left of her portrait)
      • They cannot choose which 'theme' since that is dependent of the form Sona chooses.
    • Using An icon for Sona's ability Crescendo Crescendo for the first time as soon as an ultimate level is unlocked will upgrade the theme structure of all forms. Using the level 1 ultimate will permanently apply all basic layers, allowing the basic abilities to add new ones. Using the level 2 ultimate will allow the song reach its climax, becoming the regular version of the songs. Using the level 3 ultimate will trigger a more dynamic and intense version of the regular songs.
      • If An icon for Sona's ability Crescendo Crescendo is used for the first time while in Kinetic form, a fragment of the Metroid theme will play.
    • Her helmet references Guy Manuel de Homem Christo from Daft Punk.

      • This also makes this the first skin were she's not able to move her arms freely as she is bound by the restraints.
