Development

Sona is voiced by Erin Fitzgerald, who also voices DJ Sona, PsyOps Sona and Janna.^[1]
- Classic Sona's voice over was updated along the release of PsyOps Sona.
  - Sona's Brazillian voice actor is Aline Ghezzi, who also voiced PsyOps Sona, Orianna and Pre-rework Akali
Sona, Zed, Garen, and Vi were targeted by Deadeye in his teaser.
- After Sona was shot, her champion icon on her League of Legends website page and champion list were updated to a gif with what seems to be butterflies floating past and marks near her throat.
There are textures for an unreleased Disco skin for Sona.
Sona is an older champion release that had no login screen, but she had a theme created to be remixed for DJ Sona.

Universe

Sona comes from Proto-Italic verbal root *swen- "to sound"^[2] plus feminine suffix -a
- *Swen- historically yields Proto-Italic *swenos > Latin sonus > French son > English sound.
- Her title Maven references her musical skill with her Etwahl. & comes from Yiddish:
  - From Hebrew מֵבִין meḇin & מבינה meḇinah, active participles of hebin < bān < Semitic root b-y-n "to separate, to discern";^[3]
- Her instrument's name is based on & pronounced the same as French étoile [etʷal] < PIE root *h₂sters (> English star)^[4]
  - Etwahl's shape is based on the Chinese Guzheng.
Sona is mute. She communicates with others mostly by using sign language.^[5]
- In Runeterra Legacy, she could communicate to Summoners/players via telepathy.
Sona is possibly in her early - mid 20s.
Her Etwhal is an ancient magical musical instrument that was made thousand years ago.
Her adoptive parents led a hunt party that hired Quinn and her brother Caleb to kill a giant tuskvore. The events led to Caleb's death. Later, Lestara sponsored Quinn to be a knight as a repayment for saving her husband's life.
Her adoptive father died in the battle of the Gates of Mourning, the loss of which led to Jarvan IV being captured by the Noxian army.
Her adoptive sister Kahina introduced Lux to the Illuminators.
Jhin sees Sona as an art rival, stating that his form of art leaves longer, more lasting imprints though she doesn't know about him.
Lux and Ezreal are fans of her performance. Swain is also interested in her etwahl and potentially a fan.

League of Legends

Gameplay

A Power Chord consists of a double root and the fifth, often heard in rock music.
A Hymn (Greek: 'song of praises') is a type of song usually associated to religion.
- While Hymn of Valor's aura is active, the game's theme can be heard.
An Aria is a type of melody usually associated with operas.
Crescendo (Italian: 'growing') refers to the amplification of volume in music.
- In-game Crescendo triggers both a stun and the target(s)' dance emote simultaneously.
Sona was deemed overpowered/obnoxious for Ultra Rapid Fire in April 2014, and was ultimately disabled in non-custom games.
At one time, Sona held the title of lowest base Armor (9).
Sona's Deutsch/German title, Die Virtuosin, is the feminine derivative of Jhin's title, Der Virtuose.
Enemy champions hit by Crescendo will be forced to dance while they are stunned.

Sona, Maven of the Strings

Sona mentions music notation and direction terms in her lines. The terms themselves are derived from Italian.
- "Adagio" = slow tempo, also 'gently' / 'gracefully' / 'leisurely'.
- "Andante" = medium tempo, also 'agilely' / 'lightly'.
- "Allegro" = fast tempo, also 'brisk' and 'lively' / 'cheerful'.
- "Allegrissimo" = very fast tempo (also superlative of "allegro")
- "Brioso, brioso!" = play with vigor, also 'vivacious' / 'high-spirited'.
- "Sforzando = play with additional stress/prominence, meaning "with force".
- "Ostinato" = a repeated motif or phrase.
- "Crescendo" is both the act of gradually increasing the stress or loudness, as well as the highest or loudest point in a musical act.
The tune from Sona's taunt references the popular announcer line "Finish Him/Her"! from Mortal Kombat.
"When fields lie calm, and wind stands still. Run home." is a reference to Fiddlesticks' theme song.

PsyOps Sona

"From my mind, to yours" might be referencing the Vulcan mind meld from Star Trek franchise.

She resembles and might have been heavily inspired by Hatsune Miku.

Muse Sona

This skin shares the Fables theme with:

She references the eponymous Greek mythical beings.

Pentakill Sona

She was released in celebration of Snowdown Showdown 2010 along with:
She references the eponymous Christmas carol and even its origins as a guitar tune.
If she and Reindeer Kog'Maw are close to each other and both play their jokes four times after another with Sona going first, they will play and sing an excerpt from Deck the Halls. A video demonstrating this can be viewed here.
Despite being priced at 520, the skin received recolored VFX and auras which have a snowflake motif.

Guqin Sona

Arcade Sona

She references many '80s and early '90s video game effects.
- Crescendo's visual references Dance Dance Revolution by displaying the sequence (↑→)(←)(↑→)(↑)(↑)(↑)
Her basic attacks will change according to the song she played.
If Sona activates Talisman of Ascension the visual effect displayed will be an old version of Classic Song of Celerity's.

DJ Sona
Chromas: Concussive, Ethereal

She is the first to be fully music-based, the second being Bard.
- She doesn't speak at all like in Classic.
She exists in the Riot Records universe, alongside Pentakill and K/DA.^[6]
She has a combined over three hours of sound effects, music, and 'voiceover', making her the champion with the most sound files.
- They call all be heard here.
She has three toggleable ('/toggle' or Ctrl + 5 by default, second row from the bottom in Options > Hotkeys > Communication > Toggle to rebind) forms ( Kinetic, Concussive, Ethereal)
- Changing forms a 0.5 seconds cast time and a 2 seconds global cooldown (this also triggers while in combat)
  - Each one has a 'theme' that is played in layers as the game progresses.
    - The layers played will be added to all songs depending on what basic ability is used for the first time and also which level of ultimate has been used for the first time, the latter also affecting the theme structure.
Sona's teammates can opt in to listen her soundtrack from the scoreboard (icon to the left of her portrait)
- They cannot choose which 'theme' since that is dependent of the form Sona chooses.
Using Crescendo for the first time as soon as an ultimate level is unlocked will upgrade the theme structure of all forms. Using the level 1 ultimate will permanently apply all basic layers, allowing the basic abilities to add new ones. Using the level 2 ultimate will allow the song reach its climax, becoming the regular version of the songs. Using the level 3 ultimate will trigger a more dynamic and intense version of the regular songs.
- If Crescendo is used for the first time while in Kinetic form, a fragment of the Metroid theme will play.
Her helmet references Guy Manuel de Homem Christo from Daft Punk.
Her joke might be referencing Flipping Tables / (╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻ .
Her cube from Concussive references the Button Beats Dubstep Cube.
DJ is the first skin in which Sona's legs can be actually seen.

Odyssey Sona

She was likely inspired by Ayesha from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Princess Nuala from Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
Her splash art slightly resembles Doctor Who's eleventh season poster, starring Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor.

PsyOps Sona
Chromas: Amethyst, Citrine, Emerald, Hunter, Obsidian, Ruby, Sapphire, Turquoise

This skin shares the PsyOps theme with:

Classic Sona's voice over was updated along the release of the skin.
This is the first Sona skin where she can't use her arms prior to using Crescendo.
The splash art depicts her being freed from her captor as shown in OPERATION: SONGBIRD.
Upon learning Crescendo, she unbounds herself from the restraints.
- This also makes this the first skin were she's not able to move her arms freely as she is bound by the restraints.
Her empowered form appears when Power Chord is available.
